Lot Essay

Known to be one of the top centres of production within the region for the tropical banana fruit, Banana king is an apt portrayal of the consequent economic benefits that the simple fruit has contributed to Indonesia.

The back landscape of the work is painted with the prominent shadows of banana trees with Masriadi's signature bloated character prominently located at the forefront of the work, biting into an excessively proportioned banana. The tanned complexion of the figure is likely to be that of the farmer who is reaping and feasting on the rich spoils of the harvest, as signified by the enormous fruit painted the colour of yellow gold, that come from the commercial farming of the indigenous tree. In his enjoyment of the fruit, the voracity of appetite is expressed on the face of the subject. The predominant use of solid primary colours emphasise this simple abundance that is so described in the work.

Again in this work, Masriadi has used effectively the trademark caricature figure to relate to his audience his social observation in a light hearted and non-offensive manner.
