Luxurious blue

In his regard of the complexities of life, Agus has become a social activist through his art. His works are affected with connotations of the oppressed and other current affairs. Agus makes his art very personal, to the point of using himself as a model for his works. This personal involvement of the artist through his physical representation on the canvas makes his messages more real, it affords him a direct and more believable stake when imparting his opinion. In Agus' works, he strives to liberate daily stereotypes and empower the viewer with this knowledge.

In this particular piece, the subject is being liberated, in a manner unlike that of challenging social stigmas. Agus' upbringing in a Catholic environment and strict Catholic schooling probably had an influence on this work. The subject portrayed is being liberated spiritually. Again, the subject is that of a portrait of the artist, which is important that he be presented as it is also symbolic of his gratitude towards God. The pouring of the blue liquid is that of holy water, a blessing from God. The entire composition concentrates on the subject's face and the single source of flowing water from above, distinguishing the direct connection and private relationship with God. The link to God is coloured in a prominent blue in stark contrast against the pallid neutral facial tones, giving the title Luxurious blue new significance in the richness and intensity of this spiritual bond. This work was part of a series of works where there were colour variations in the splashes of water. This rainbow of colours bears the distinct symbol of nature which is the presentation of life and also the fundamental gift from God. The colours that were included in this series were that of gold, red, green and yellow.
