Lot Essay

Gertrud Leistikow (1885-1948) was a Polish dancer, who came to the Netherlands in 1918. She opened dance studios in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. As a result of her contacts in artistic circles, she was an important promoter of 'Ausdruckstanz'. This expressive form of dancing opposed classical ballet, and used the bodies of the dancers in a much freeer way to represent emotions.

To be included in the catalogue raisonné on the artist's work being prepared by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The
Hague.
