WINGED SAINT JOHN WITH EPISODES FROM HIS LIFE
RUSSIAN, LATE 18TH CENTURY
The Baptist makes the sign of benediction and holds an open scroll and his head in a tray. His dominant figure is complimented by scenes from his life: his birth, the preceded announcement of his conception to his father, Zachariah and, his decollation. God the Father in glory appears from the clouds above.
The representation of the winged Saint John derives from the Late Byzantine art. The wings are his attributes in his manifestation as the 'Angel of the desert', since like the angels, he was a messenger too. The icon is finely painted with deep, subdued colours, highlighted with linear gold and white brushstrokes. - 9 7/8 x 12 in. (25.25 x 30 cm.)
