THE APOSTLE BARNABAS
CYPRIOT, 19TH CENTURY
Saint Barnabas is seated frontally on a wooden, elaborately carved throne. He is dressed in opulent garments of Byzantine style and wears the mitre. His right hand is raised in blessing and in his left hand he holds the open Book, which displays a quotation from Luke's Gospel. Saint Barnabas is one of the seventy Apostles and, as the founder of the autocephalous Church of Cyprus, is particularly venerated on the island. Usually the Saint is represented half figure holding a scroll. The iconography of this panel copies the image of the Saint as he appears on the iconostasis of the Church of the Monastery of Apostle Barnabas in Salamis, Cyprus. - 11 x 8in. (28 x 20.5cm.)
