[DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll').] Word-Links. [Oxford: University Press, 1878.]
Bifolium (176 x 115mm).
FIRST PRINTED EDITION of what became 'Doublets', a game which 'gained considerable vogue, and is still popular' (WMGC p.100). Dodgson invented the game at Christmas 1877 for two young ladies 'with nothing to do', presumably Julia and Ethel Arnold (Cohen p. 335n). Vanity Fair took up the game, printed the rules, and on 19 April 1879 inaugurated a Doublets competition. The present edition is an improved and simpler version of a small cyclostyled edition of probably 10 copies (3 copies known). Neither Dodgson at Auction 1893-1999 nor ABPC since 1975 record any copies selling at auction. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 125.
