Wood-engraved diagrammatic frontispiece and numerous diagrams in text complete with original printed envelope containing the separate card-diagram and COMPLETE WITH 9 ORIGINAL COUNTERS, five grey and four pink. (Light even browning, envelope with some soiling, spotting, and short tears.) Original red cloth gilt, black coated endpapers (minor soiling); modern cloth box. Provenance: Belknap and Warfield, Hartford CT (19th-century bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown).

RARE SUPPRESSED FIRST EDITION, ONE OF THE 50 COPIES BOUND AT DODGSON'S REQUEST; 'a mystery edition which is rarer than would be expected' (WMGC). Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 193.
