ADAMS, Douglas (1952-2001). Hermes Standard 8 Manual Typewriter, grey-green enamel casing, SIGNED IN THICK FELT PEN BY ADAMS ACROSS THE FRONT CASING.
A UNIQUE ARTEFACT OF ONE OF BRITAIN'S BEST-LOVED WRITERS, DATING FROM THE PERIOD IN WHICH HE WROTE HIS MOST FAMOUS WORK, THE HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. This typewriter belonged to Adams during the the late 1970s, when he was working on the original radio script for Hitch-Hiker. Adams was passionately concerned about wildlife and conservation and in 1998 he signed and donated the typewriter to an auction organised to raise funds for The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. It bears an anti-apartheid sticker on one side of the casing and is contained in its original packaging: a box from Adams' publisher, Simon & Schuster, which originally contained copies of Terry Jones' novelisation of Adams' Starship Titanic, with the shipper's label addressed to Adams at his office, The Digital Village, Maiden Lane, London. The typewriter keys still bear the marks of Adams' famously painstaking labour. Significantly, the 'x' key is particularly discoloured.
