MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY, SIGNED ZHANG CHENG ZAO

Deeply carved against a yellow ground to the cover with a central peony flower born on a leafy stem surrounded by further peony, lilly and chrysanthemum sprigs, the box with a similar composite flower scroll, crackles and minor losses to the interior and base

A similar box also with Zhang Cheng zao mark is in the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya city, Japan, illustrated in Karamono, Imported Lacquerwork, 1997. no. 59. Another example with a Yongle mark in National Palace Museum, Taipei, is illustrated in Gugong qiqi tezhan tulu, 1981, no 10.
