Lot Essay

The composition derives from Jouvenet's prototype in the Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts. Leroy records four versions of the subjet (see F.N Leroy, Histoire de Jouvenet, Paris, 1860). The subject was engraved by Alexis Loir etched by Fabri.
