Lot Essay

The personal cypher of Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) was the intertwined double 'A' motif, which appeared on stationary, literature and various other items belonging to her. The 'A's, originally with pointed tops, were changed to square tops upon her coronation in 1901. It has been suggested that she chose these letters to differentiate herself from other members of the Royal Family whose names also began with an 'A', such as Princess Alice, her sister-in-law, who chose a single 'A' for her cypher.
