Lot Essay

Anne Collingham was the assumed name for London fan club secretary Mary Cockram. At the time that Mary was employed by Tony Barrow, The Beatles fan club had been set up and was being run from the homes of Freda Kelly in Liverpool and Bettina Rose in Surrey. As the volume of mail increased however, a London office was opened and the fans were asked to write to Anne Collingham, who did not as such exist. Sooner or later the fans wanted to meet Anne Collingham and as Mary Cockram says ...a body was needed and that is where I came in...that explains why reference is made only to Anne Collingham...I had hoped at the time they would "kill Anne off" so I could use my own name but she became almost as famous as the Beatles themselves...
