Lot Essay

This was Denijs van Alsloot's most successful composition, its popularity attested to by a comparatively large number of versions and copies. The primary treatment is generally understood to be the picture datable to circa 1620 in the Prado, Madrid while other versions include the pictures in the Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (formerly attributed to Sebastian Vrancx); the Alte Pinakothek, Munich; and sold in these Rooms, 7 July 1978, lot 239. This version is apparently unrecorded.
