Lelienbergh joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1646, participating in the Confrerie Picture in 1656. A painter of mainly still lifes with game and some kitchen interiors, the influence of Jan-Baptiste Weenix is strongly evident. He worked in the Hague at the same time as the latter's nephew, Melchior d'Hondecoeter, and the two seemed to have influenced each other.
The present lot, which is unusual in terms of its size, is likely to be a late work by the artist, when it has been noted that his paintings became more ambitious and influenced by the work of contemporary Flemish painters such as Adriaen van Utrecht.
