A rare George III mahogany longcase clock with astronomical indications
Barry, Leigh. Circa 1780
The case with raised hollow-cornered panel to the plinth resting on bracket feet, the trunk door with Gothic wavy arch and brass urn escutcheon, the elaborate hood with detached fluted columns flanking fluted pilasters on the glazed door, the swan-neck arch with unusual painted lead rosette terminals and faux verre eglomise freize panels, surmounted by urn-and-eagle finials, the dial signed Barry, Leigh in the foliate engraved centre beneath the age of moon ring, the sector below indicating THE RISE AND SET OF THE SUN against a scale engraved IIII-V-VI-VII-VIII and with two spring-loaded hands; the setting indicated by a blued and polished steel hand and the rising by a blued steel and brass sunburst hand, the hands automatically set via a cam system operated via the motion work behind the dial and also with manual setting device, the wide diameter Roman and Arabic chapter ring with outer concentric calendar ring showing months and date with blued steel hands, sweep centre seconds hand, the movement with four pillars, rack strike on a bell mounted in a transverse position above the movement, pinwheel-type deadbeat escapement
