Lot Essay

As noted by Ian Bennett in Oriental Rugs, Volume I, Caucasian, Austria, 1981, p. 176-177, the series of paired birds in the present lot have more realistic features as their fan-tails are shorter and they have well defined legs. This archaic drawing indicates an earlier date. A similar example with matching ivory border and exceptional colour variety was sold Christie's, London, 13 October 2005, lot 37.
