[ALMANAC]. THOMAS, Robert B. The Farmer's Almanac, Calculated on a New and Improved Plan, for the Year of our Lord, 1793. Boston: Apollo Press for Belknap and Hall, [1792].
12o (186 x 117 mm). 48 pages. (Title with marginal repair and a few letters in pen famsimile, repaired tears to second leaf, some edgewear as usual.) Stitched.
THE FIRST OF THE CELEBRATED FARMER'S ALMANACS, STILL BEING PUBLISHED TO THIS DAY. At end is an anecdote of the Marquis de Lafayette, instructions on how to raise and manage hemp and flax, a list of the vacations at Dartmouth and Harvard Colleges, an account of the persecution of the Jews, and a list of roads and inn-keepers along the principal roads. "The arrangement of the Almanac is novel...I have taken particular care to make the calculations accurate in every respect; and beside the more than usual astronomical calculations, I have added the rising, setting, or southing of the seven stars, for every evening through the year..." (p. [2]). For many, the Thomas Farmer's Almanac is the definition of what an almanac is. Drake 3493; Evans 24847.
