McKENNEY, Thomas L. (1785-1859) and James HALL (1793-1868). History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia: J.T. Bowen, 1848-1850.

3 volumes, 8o (268 x 169 mm). Hand-colored lithographed dedication and 119 (of 120) hand-colored lithographed plates by J.T. Bowen, most after King (lacks Red Bird plate [frontispiece to vol. 2], some occasional browning and spotting). Contemporary red morocco gilt, edges gilt (some light rubbing to edges), but a very good set.

FIRST OCTAVO EDITION IN A PRESENTATION BINDING, following the folio edition of 1836-1844. The plates, which Howes describes as "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed," are based on King's portraits in the Indian Gallery, Department of War, Washington, allv of which were destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. This copy lacks the additional plate of "Red Bird," used as the frontispiece to vol. II in the octavo edition. The famous portrait of Pochontas is included in volume III, and evidence is provided at the end of the volume that it was taken from the copy of a painting made during her visit to England where she died in 1617. Howes M-129; Sabin 43411. (3)
