Lot Essay

The design of this salver reflects the influence of Charles Osborne, as it employs the distinctive whorl floral medallions and Persian motifs, which are also seen on a tray designed by Osborne between 1879-1884. Although Osborne left Tiffany & Co. in 1887, his legacy is clearly seen in the Saracenic, Japanese and floral styles produced by Tiffany throughout the 1880s. (See John Loring, Magnificent Tiffany Silver, 2001, p. 158-159, for an illustration of the related tray).
