Lot Essay

The arrival of Egyptian artifacts in the United States in 1852, inspired a host of related motifs in furniture. As exemplified on the armrests of the chairs and porcelain plaques at the center of their crestrails, designs incorporating ancient figureheads and floral patterns, respectively, complemented the intrigue and interest in past civilizations.
