Lot Essay

The attribution to Fragonard was confirmed by Eunice Williams in a communication dated 21 November 2005, noting that another version of the composition in black chalk over a black chalk counterproof is in the collection of the Marquis de Ganay (A. Ananoff, L'oeuvre dessiné de Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Paris, 1970, IV, no. 2649, fig. 672).
