Lot Essay

The picture is based on a composition by the Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert that is known to us through a print by the Haarlem copper engraver Jacob Matham (Haarlem 1571-1631), dating from circa 1590-1610 (see M.G. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, Doornspijk 1993, nr. 48, fig. 88).
