Lot Essay

François Hogerwaard, a brother of the painter George Hogerwaard, was educated at the Rijksacademie of Amsterdam (1904-06), where he became friends with Tjeerd Bottema and Wim de Haas. In 1910 he won the Prix de Rome and stayed in Spain and Italy. Hogerwaard was known for his (mundane) portraits and figures, and for his landscapes.
