Of sarcophagus form, with rectangular moulded lid with brass handle enclosing an interior with two mahogany divisions, with bombé body, on bracket feet, the underside inscribed indistinctly in ink 'G W 59 ... 1820(?)'

Lot Essay

This pattern of reed-banded Roman sarcophagus chest, with altar-hollowed dome, was introduced in the 1740s and featured in Thomas Chippendale's, Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, 1754 (pl. 129).
