A Wood family figure of Chaucer
probably by Ralph Wood, the writer modelled standing, in Medieval dress, one hand holding his coat front, the other holding a book beside a stack of others atop a plinth, one foot resting on the base of the plinth, set on a marbleised base, enriched in colours -- 12¾in . (32.3cm.) high, circa 1785-1810 (slight wear and minor chips)

C.f. English Earthenware Figures by Pat Halfpenny, p.141, where a similar figure is illustrated. Ms. Halfpenny notes that this type of figure is '..typical of the first phase of enamel painted figures..the colours used are usually delicate and subtle.'
