Lot Essay

C.f. English Earthenware Figures by Pat Halfpenny, p.267, where a similar model is illustrated from the collection of the Royal Pavilion Art Gallery & Museum at Brighton. For an explanation of the subject, which is based on the story of Cimon and Pera and a popular 18th century play (Cimon was imprisoned and his daughter Pera nourished him by allowing him to suckle from her) see Staffordshire Pottery by Anthony Oliver, p.48.
