MARK OF SEBASTIAN GARRARD, LONDON, 1933
Oblong and on four block feet, with an engine turned finish, the hinged cover applied with a coat-of-arms and with a gilded laurel border, the interior wood fitted and engraved with an inscription, marked on flange and inside cover, the base stamped 'Garrard & Co. Ltd. Albermarle St. London, W.', contained in a fitted leather case
8 in. (20.3 cm.) long
gross weight 32 oz. (1,009 gr.)
The inscription reads 'Presented to H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester, K.G., by the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of The Borough of Swindon on the occasion of the opening by him of new Civic Offices on the 5th July 1938.'

The arms are those of the Borough of Swindon.

Lot Essay

The Victorian Town Hall in Swindon, on Regent Street, was opened in 1891. The Civic Offices, on Euclid Road, opened by Prince Henry in 1938 provided much need office space and is now the headquarters of Swindon Borough Council.
