Lot Essay

The earliest reference to the town of Hawick is thought to be the record of the Bishop of Caithness' dedication of the town church to the Virgin Mary. The Barony was originally granted to Richard Lovel Domminus de Hawic in 1347. The barony was later conferred on Douglas of Drumlanrig, ancestor of the Dukes of Queensberry and Buccleuch. The earliest grant of a burgh to the town is lost, however a charter of 1537 is extant.
