Lot Essay

Little is known about the Dalby sporting family of artists, although the most prolific are thought to have been David Dalby (1794-1836) and John Dalby. The first record of John Dalby is in 1838, when he was living with another member of the family, Thomas Dalby, at 38 Stonegate, York, and was recorded as a painter. John Dalby specialised in hunting scenes, typically finished in great detail.
