Lot Essay

John Nost Sartorius was the son of Francis Sartorius (1734-1804) and grandson of John Sartorius (1700-c.1780). He was the most prolific of this important family of sporting painters. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1781-1824, and specialised mainly in portraits of horses and racing and hunting scenes. He established a successful practice, and illustrius patrons included the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Derby and Lord Foley. He worked frequently at Newmarket, but was based mainly in London.
