The library-table's stepped and plinth-supported pilasters are appropriately fretted with poetic 'Apollo' lyre-scrolls that are wrapped and flowered in triumphal palms. Its robust Grecian form reflects the antique fashion promoted by Henry Whitaker, artist, furniture-designer and author of The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Treasury of designs, 1847. Whitaker, whose designs were executed by firms such as Holland & Sons, also supplied Prince Albert with designs in the 1840s for the furnishing of Osborne House, Isle of Wight.
