EDWARD, second duke of York [Edward of Langley, Edward of York] (c.1373-1415). The Master of Game: The Oldest English Book on Hunting, edited by W. A. and F. Baillie-Grohman, foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. London: Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. for the editors, 1904.

2° (400 x 284mm). Title printed in red and black. Chromolithographic frontispiece heightened in gilt and 51 photogravure and monotint plates. Illustrations. (Occasional light finger-marking.) Original vellum gilt by Zaehnsdorf, upper board with gilt seal of Edward, 2nd Duke of York, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut (a little marked, small stain on lower board). Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (1862-1939, bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's, 15 July 1946, lot 2398).

SCHWERDT COPY AND NO. 2 OF 10 COPIES signed by W.A. Baillie-Grohman, printed on japanese vellum and specially-bound by Zaehnsdorf. Of the total edition of 600 copies, the 10 printed on japanese vellum and bound by Zaehnsdorf were priced at £30 while the remaining 590, printed on paper and bound in calf, sold at £6. However, a ms note on the prospectus loosely inserted into this copy suggests that Schwerdt had only paid $35 for it. Schwerdt II, p. 305: 'A magnificently got-up book, of which the introductory chapters and bibliographical notes are of the greatest interest'.
