MARKLAND, George. Pteryplegia: or, the Art of Shooting-Flying. A Poem. London: J. Roberts, 1717.

8° (190 x 110mm). (Title lightly spotted, interlinear note lightly rubbed away from last page.) Old-style Cambridge-panelled calf gilt by Riviere, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 11 March 1946, lot 1727).

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST POEM ON SHOOTING, THE SCHWERDT COPY, issue with p.iii numbered and with the errata on p. vi. An entertaining poem on shooting every kind of native gamebird with excellent advice on how to dress, how to stand, how to use your gundogs, etc., dedicated 'To all Fair Sportsmen'. Further editions followed in 1727 (2), 1735 and 1767. The authorship of the poem has often been confused with George's father, Abraham (see Schwerdt, Lowndes, &c.), and the first edition is so rare that its existence has even been questioned. ESTC records only one copy in the U.K. (Worcester College Library, Oxford) and two in the U.S. (Yale; Austin, Texas). NO COPY IN BL. Foxon M98; Schwerdt II, pp. 13-14: 'The poem is full of sound instructions'; this edition not in Chute.
