Interspersed with Tail-Pieces & Embellishments alluding to the Sport. London: sold by J. Barker, [c.1825, title watermarked 1824, several plates watermarked 1812].
8° (216 x 126mm). Letterpress title, engraved index and 40 engraved plates by and after James and Henry Roberts, each with a portrait of a thoroughbred and a record of its wins, some with a vignette at foot. (A few light marks.) Red morocco gilt in the style of Riviere, gilt turn-ins, top edges gilt, others uncut. Provenance: George Barrett (his name blackstamped three times on verso of index leaf).
Second edition of these attractive plates first issued in c. 1760, each recording the owner's name, an appraisal of the horse's qualities and its racing record. The horses depicted were running between the 1720s and the 1750s and include Flying Childers, the great great uncle of Eclipse. The title states that 'This Work may be Framed & Glazed in various Sizes'. Huth p.38; cf. Mellon/Podeschi 54.
