Oblong 4°, album (180 x 240mm), watercolours (87 x 133mm). An album of 9 pencil and watercolour drawings, variously titled in pencil on mounts 'Blucher'; 'The Stag at Bay'; 'Death of the Hare'; 'The Kennell'; 'Unkennelling'; 'Unkennelling'; 'Unkennelling'; 'Horses Bathing'; and 'The Curate fishing for a living', the last drawing signed 'H.Alken' (lower right), each mounted on thick card leaves (some light discolouration and spotting). Red morocco gilt by Riviere, spine in six compartments with raised bands, Schwerdt crest in lower compartment, tooled gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 27 June 1939, lot 1192).

A fine collection of Alken watercolours of horses and hounds, both in the stable and in the field. Schwerdt described them as 'These spirited drawings, with the delicacy of their colouring, represent Alken's best work'. Schwerdt III, p.199.
