PANORAMA -- [ALKEN, Henry (1784-1851)]. Panorama of the Progress of Human life, fashionably display'd illustrating Shakespears Ages And giving at the same time the Manners, Costume, Amusements and the Field sports of the English People. London: S. and J.Fuller, [1820].
Hand-coloured aquatint panorama in 35 scenes, many of sporting subjects, overall 6.7 x 455cm. in 10 joined sections. (Some light browning at margins, a few old repairs at joins, first scene browned with corner chipped). Contained in its original boxwood roller with coloured engraved label 'The Review London published by J.Hudson 85 Cheapside', old varnish (label slightly rubbed, wooden bar at beginning lacking).
AN ATTRACTIVE AND AMUSING PANORAMA BY HENRY ALKEN documenting the progress of a young mans life from the nursery to the family circle taking in all the manly sports between. Although not signed by the Alken many of the sporting scenes are adaptions of the images in National Field Sports. Schwerdt III p.2; Abbey Life 474 (with variant roller title-label)
