V, Sporting Life, 18 August 1847-26 Feb 1848; vols. VI-VII, 4 March-21 October 1848. General title and one-leaf index to vols. I-VI, engraved frontispiece portrait of James Ward by Gibbs in vol. IV, numerous text illustrations. (Neat repaired tear in one leaf in vol. I, a few leaves misbound in I: no. 18, some light spotting.) 19th-century red calf gilt, top edge gilt, by Root and Son. Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 16 July 1946, lot 2629).

The Schwerdt copy of The Sportsman's Magazine, a periodical that began as The Sporting World in March 1845, changing its name in May after 9 issues, and again in 1847 to Sporting Life. Regardless of its title, it covered a broad range of sports, including boxing, angling, riding, cricket, swimming, gymnastics, hunting, birding, etc. Schwerdt II, 222 ('Rare in this complete state').
