Finely painted in the center in colored enamels and gilt with the arms of Gordon quartering Badenoch, Seton and Fraser, the molded, scalloped rim with "blue Fitzhugh" border

Lot Essay

D.S. Howard writes (op. cit., p. 673) that this was made for a relative of the 4th Duke of Gordon, quite likely Lockhart Gordon, who died in Calcutta in 1788, and reports that in June 1930 the dinner, tea and dessert service, totaling 329 pieces, was sold at Puttick & Simpson.
