Lot Essay

Jenny Holzer is best known for her eye-catching and contradictory texts as well as her expert manipulation of mass media channels (ranging from text-laden, light-emitting diode (LED) signs to street posters, plaques, and even brief television spots).
Holzer's art came to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s when she began to plaster posters of her Truism series throughout the streets of New York. The Truism series was created in an attempt to convey knowledge in a language and manner that is easily accessible. This contradictory list, arranged in alphabetical order, appears as a catalogue of clichés, but in fact is written and devised by Holzer.
This work is a selection from that project, which consists of 172 phrases, arranged alphabetically from A to R in a cycle which lasts 24 minutes.
