FERRARIO, Giulio (1767-1847). Il costume antico e moderno o storia del governo, della milizia, della religione, delle arti, scienze ed usanze di tutti i popoli antichi e moderni. Florence: Vincenzo Batelli, 1823-30. 26 volumes in 31, large 8° (231 x 145mm). 1619 engraved plates, plans and maps, some folding, some aquatint, of which 1560 hand-coloured or tinted, half-titles (one plate in volume I of Asia slightly defective, map of South America detached, a few short tears in folding plates, some foxing and spotting). Contemporary straight-grained morocco-backed boards with vellum corners, flat spines gilt (mostly rather rubbed). Provenance: H.M. Bower (19th-century signature on an endpaper).
Second, enlarged, edition of Ferrario's comprehensive account of the flora and fauna, costumes, religious customs, recreations of all the peoples of the world, both ancient and modern and including many topographical views etc. The inhabitants of Australia and New Zealand are described and illustrated in volume VIII of Asia. cf.Colas 1054 (omitting the final European volume).
