FIRST EDITION. NUMBER 4 OF 100 SPECIALLY BOUND AND NUMBERED COPIES WITH A SIGNED ORIGINAL DRAWING BY THE ARTIST LAID IN. The drawing, in black ink, depicts a female dancer. Covarrubias was part of the extraordinary circle of Mexican artists which included Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Many of his Negro Drawings originally appeared in Vanity Fair, which Covarrubias joined soon after his arrival in New York in 1923. "Covarrubias ... was the first important artist in America ... to bestow upon our Negro anything like reverent attention" (Frank Crowninshield, from his Introduction).
