WEELKES, Thomas (1576?-1623). Madrigals of 5 and 6 parts, apt for the Viols and voices. London: Thomas Este for Thomas Morley, 1600. 4 (of 6) parts, 4° (212 x 160mm), type-ornament title borders, woodcut music on staves, historiated and ornamental initials and tailpieces (lacking 'Basso' and 'Sesto' and title-page of 'Canto'). 17th-century wrappers, stab-stitched. FIRST EDITION. STC 25206 (8 locations, only 4 complete).
Thomas Weelkes was organist to Winchester College (1598-1601/2) and Chichester Cathedral, where he wrote a significant number of verse anthems. His madrigals 'opened up a vein of musical pathos that was ... quite unprecedented in English music' (DNB). His 1600 collection contains some of the finest examples of his work, notably the five-voice 'O care, thou wilt despatch me' and the six-voice 'Thule, the period of cosmography'.
MORLEY, Thomas. The First Book of Balletts to Five Voyces. London: Thomas Este, 1595. 3 (of 5) parts, 4°, title with device and type-ornament border, woodcut music on staves, ornamental head- and tailpieces (lacking 'Cantus' and 'Tenore' and first 2 leaves of 'Altus', 2 leaves torn with slight loss in 'Altus'). Uniformly bound in drab, stab-stitched wrappers, early flexible board chemise (soiled). FIRST EDITION. STC 18116.
Thomas Morley (1556/7-c1602) was master of choristers at Norwich Cathedral (1583-87) and organist of St Paul's in London before becoming a member of the Chapel Royal in 1592. His Canzonets or Little Short Songs to Three Voyces, published by William Byrd in 1593, was the first set of madrigalian works by an English composer. The First Book of Balletts shows him adopting a more Italianate style than in his earlier collections. (7)
