The circular top finely enamelled and depicting an Asiatic bird of paradise perched on a cherry blossom branch, a butterfly hovering close by, against a turquoise and interlocking wan-emblems ground, a shield-shaped mark below the stem of the branch inscribed 1885/CHRISTOFLE & CIE/157, within a stylised egg-and-dart rim, above a foliate and floral pierced cloche-shaped support resting on triple splayed legs joined by a scrolled stretcher surmounted by a butterfly and terminating in foliate feet, the underside with indistinctly inscribed shield-shaped U.S. Customs label

Lot Essay

This guéridon was designed after a drawing by Emile Reiber (1826-1893) and possibly Edouard Lièvre (1829-1886). The stunning enamel top is the work of Antoine Tard who worked for Christofle between 1860 and 1889.
