the leaf engraved with a girl playing a violin watched by Pierrot, with a country house and grand formal garden beyond, hand-coloured and heightened in gold, inscribed Vivares fecit, with ivory sticks,--10in. (25cm), English, circa 1750; and another 18th century printed fan engraved with two couples in a landscape, one gentleman playing the mandolin, with a formal garden beyond, with bone sticks (2)

Lot Essay

There are only two other fans known by Francis (Francois) Vivares (1709 - 1780), the distinguished English engraver, one in the Late Dr. I.H. van Eeghen's collection, the other in the Lennox-Boyd Collection.
