Malmsey 1830
Shipper unknown. Wax capsules. Handwritten stencils
Tasting Note: Another Henriques family wine, aged for 105 years in oak, then preserved in demijohns, bottled in 1988, shortly before shipment to London. With the 1827 Bual, the quantities were immense, roughly 100 dozen bottles of each wine, spaced through several sales. The 1830 vintage was the best. I have a total of eight notes: a deep, rich, glowing oloroso-coloured amber; chocolatey, sweet nose with fabulous, penetrating yet ethereal crystallised violets flavour and aftertaste. Last tasted a bottle from Hugh Johnson's cellar, at the Hallwag press conference, Frankfurt, Sept 1994 ***** Quite a few bottles still around. Look out for it at auction M.B.
