Lot Essay

A red japanned bracket clock signed by Simon De Charmes (a freeman of the Clockmaker's Company, 1691-1730) is illustrated in Cescinsky and Webster's, English Domestic Clocks, London, 1914. A related boulle-inlaid case in the Louis IV manner features on a 1690's long-case clock by Daniel Quare (d.1724), who was elected Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1708 (advertised by R. A. Lee in Connoisseur, May, 1956).
