Lot Essay

This sideboard table, in the Roman manner, with Bacchic lion mask between foliage swags and veil-draped shells on the ends, belongs to a group of tables sharing similar characteristics, including one in the City Art Museum of St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. that was formerly in the collection of Lord Forteviot (see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, forthcoming publication, New Haven and London, 2006). Among other related sideboard tables was one sold at Hamilton Osborne King, 6 June 2000, lot 783 and one probably supplied to Harvey Morres, 1st Viscount Morres for his new Palladian house, Castle Morres, Co. Kilkenny in the 1750s, sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 9 July 1992, lot 125.
