Lot Essay

The chair's elegantly serpentined and reeded frame, in the French 'cabriolet' manner, is wreathed by pearls in the 1760's antique or 'Etruscan' style. Its 'shell' capped legs terminating in volute-scrolls relate to a painted set of 'French Arm Chairs' supplied for the actor David Garrick's Thames-side villa at Hampton and invoiced in 1768 by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779).
