Lot Essay

The medallioned pier-glass, with pagoda-swept canopy attended by birds perched on gothic rustic pillars, is designed in the eclectic George II fashion styled as 'Modern', in T. Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754. Related 'Oval Glass Frames' also featured in W. Ince and J. Mayhew's The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762 (pl. 78). The swan recalls a 1753 engraving by M. Darly for Chippendale's invitation to the Black Swan (Victoria and Albert Museum, Rococo: Art and Design in Hogarth's England, London, 1984 (R7c).
