Lot Essay

Frederick Parker began his collection of historic chairs in the early 20th century to serve as prototypes for the firm of Messrs. Frederick Parker and Sons, which he founded 1870 in London's East End (C. Claxton Stevens, The Parker Collection, Country Life, 29 October 1998, pp.62-63).

This chair form, with its volute-scrolled arms, relates to those of a suite of japanned chairs from the Duke of Leeds Collection, illustrated in R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1924, vol. I, pl. XV.
